ANYONE up for an afternoon of ukulele? Bar 303 Northcote is the place and May 4 is the date.
Ukulele virtuoso Rose Turtle Ertler has organised some of Melbourne’s best players to join together with the West Papuan Black Orchid String Band.
It’s for a concert to raise funds for the Freedom Flotilla, which is a land and sea convoy leaving Lake Eyre in South Australia to travel to West Papua, drawing attention to the quest for independence from Indonesia.
The Freedom Flotilla is the brainchild of Arabunna elder and peacemaker Uncle Kevin Buzzacott, and Jacob Rumbiak, the exiled Foreign Affairs Minister from the Federated Republic of Occupied West Papua.
“The old land is calling us,” said Mr Buzzacott. “We were one people, we still are one people, we must uphold our cultural connection.”
