9 News: ‘Freedom Flotilla’ to Sail to West Papua

Fearing for their lives, Amos Wainggai and his friends paddled traditional canoes from West Papua to seek asylum in Australia seven years ago.

This week, Mr Wainggai plans to make the return journey by boat to support the struggle for independence in West Papua, which is under Indonesian control.

“We are a separate nation and we want that recognised,” he told AAP.
